Ways to Keep your Home Cool During the Summer

2 min read

With the hot summer heat in full swing, a cool house is a must. Keeping your windows closed during the day, closing off rooms, changing the direction of your ceiling fan or checking the sealing around your doors and windows can help keep your home comfortable—and reduce energy waste! Read on to learn about how these tips from Window World can help you beat the heat.

1. Change the Direction of your Ceiling Fan

When a fan is turning in the right direction it will keep the temperature consistent throughout the day, thus lessening the need for you to run your air conditioner at full blast. During the summer, the ceiling fan should be turning counterclockwise in order to push the air down and create a cooling breeze that circulates through the entire space.

2. Check your Door Frame and Window Sealings

As your home starts to age, you may notice small amounts of air moving around your doors and windows. Typically, this means the surrounding sealant has degraded and needs to be replaced.  In the summer, heat transfer through damaged sealing may make it harder to keep your home at a cool, comfortable temperature. Reduce strain on your HVAC system (and your utility bills) short-term by adding a layer of clear caulk, foam, vinyl, felt or metal weatherstripping around your doors and windows. For more of a long-term solution, consider upgrading your home with one of our high-performing window or door options— each built with heavy-duty weatherstripping to prevent air infiltration.

3. Using Better Window Glass

Windows allow a significant amount of light into a space; but with all that natural light comes heat that can certainly be stifling during long summer months. Installing our high-quality replacement windows, designed for maximum energy efficiency, can save you money and ensure that your space is staying bright but cool year-round. If replacing all your windows isn’t in your budget, try adding a reflective window film to help regulate room temperature at a fraction of the cost.

4. Section off Rooms and Close the Doors

In order to create less stress on your AC unit, try closing the doors and turning off the vents to the rooms you don’t spend as much time in. Sectioning off rooms in your house will lessen the cost associated with running the A/C and allow the rooms used more often to have quicker and better airflow.
